A retirement assembly was held Monday, May 16, at the Coalgate School cafeteria for seven people who have served the school, thousands of students and the community for a combined total of 175-1/2 years! Read moreCHAMBER OF COMMERCE WELCOMES NEW COALGATE CITY MANAGER AND BOARD MEMBER — The Coal County Chamber of Commerce held a meet and greet at their March 31 meeting for Coalgate City Manager Johnny Jump. Jump took the reins of city manager on March 1 and became a Chamber member at the March 31 meeting. The Chamber also welcomed Jimmy Lamoureux as the newest member of the Board. A former Texan, Jimmy and his wife, Kim, have made their home in Coalgate for the past several months. His best friend and caregiver hauled this 140-pound dead Chimp around on a cart so the other primates he lived with could say goodbye. Cheeta spent his last years at a roadside celebrity zoo near Tarpon Springs, Florida. Cheeta was later cremated, and his remains placed in an attractive burial box for his funeral. Over 60 people attended the old Tarzan movie chimps’ funeral. Cheeta was 80 years old.
Read moreIn Thursday’s regional tournament, the Tupelo Tigers slid by Buffalo Valley in a 1-0 win. Though hard fought, the Tigers then defeated Mountain View-Gotebo 4-0. Friday once again brought Tupelo and Mountain View-Gotebo together in the championship game. Tupelo took a first inning 3-0 lead and never looked back, taking the regional title in the 13-3 win.
