Maci Gaylor, and Davin Weller, both seniors at Tupelo High school are members of YAHL (Youth Action for Health Leadership), a TSET funded statewide youth-led initiative that partners with schools and organizations to make a meaningful and measurable impact on Oklahoma by promoting healthy behaviors. As a part of YAHL they work with CounterAct Tobacco, which is an initiative working to move the power out of Big Tobacco’s hands into ours through comprehensive tobacco retail licensing. Nearly 90% of tobacco users started as minors. Kids are three times more sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults. Nearly 31% of Oklahoma high school students reported using tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. The youth epidemic is growing as numbers continue to rise. Oklahoma has the 4th highest youth smoking prevalence rate. Maci and Devin are adamant about helping to improve the health of youth in this community by sharing the knowledge they have received about tobacco products and how they affect our youth of today.
