By pure chance, I pulled into the Coal County Election Board parking lot at the same time a Coalgate fire truck and ambulance came to a stop across the street at the mail drop box behind the post office. Then, firefighters opened a fire truck compartment, pulled out an axe and other tools, headed straight to the drop box and began hacking and sawing away. What in the world is going on? I ask myself. Only one way to find out - go over there and take a look. Can’t say the firefighters (Lincoln McKenney and Andrew Lee) were overjoyed to see a reporter with a camera around her neck, but they continued with their task at hand – removing the box and cutting it open so the mail inside could be retrieved. Postmaster Jeromy Thomas said it appeared that a vehicle had hit the box from the street side. A new box will be installed, he said, but he has not yet received word as to when he’ll receive it.
