Service held for Jeffery “Jeff” Wade Sewell

Funeral services for Jeffery “Jeff” Wade Sewell, an Atoka, OK resident, (raised in OKC in his early years, moved to Coalgate in grade school and then moved to Atoka his freshman year in high school) will be held Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Atoka Football Field in Atoka with OHP Chaplin Sam Garner, Bro. Joe Chapin and Bro. John Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Green Meadows Cemetery in Atoka with Brown’s Funeral Service of Atoka in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Jean Boyd passes away

Phyllis Jean (Clapp) Boyd, a Mustang, OK resident, passed away September 8, 2020 at Oklahoma City at the age of 75 years and 15 days. She was born August 24, 1945 to Richard “Bobbie” and Ermadean (Eddings) Hobgood at Ada, OK. Mrs. Boyd graduated from Coalgate High School and attended South Oklahoma City Community College where she received an Associate Degree. She was a travel agent, worked for a title and abstract company and was a hairdresser. Phyllis married Thurman James Boyd January 7, 1963 in Atoka, OK. She loved to travel and loved gardening.... there wasn’t anything she couldn’t grow. Everyone loved her amazing breakfasts and the sweets she always made too many of. They mostly loved when she got the silly giggles and couldn’t stop laughing. Phyllis will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of Captain Jeffery W. Sewell #26 who lost his battle with COVID-19 on Saturday, September 26. Everyone across the state of Oklahoma who knew Jeff Sewell is mourning the loss of a friend and a great lawman. The sadness is particularly felt in Coal and Atoka Counties.

NEW BOOKS FOR EMERSON LIBRARY:

Linda Beal, E. E. Emerson librarian, is peeking out among the piles of new books purchased for the library. The IAL-Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program Grant has spent approximately $30,000 in the last two years to purchase close to three thousand books and children’s magazines. Students have access to magazines such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, National Geographic for Kids, Outdoor Oklahoma, Highlights, Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick, Jr., Humpty Dumpty, Zoodinos, and Zootles. Mrs. Debra Johnson, E. E. Emerson Principal, is director of the IAL Grant.
