Joy Nell Samuels
Joy Nell Reynolds Samuels, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away on January 11, 2023.
Joy was born on December 18, 1939 to Nelson and Ruby Reynolds in Mexia, Texas. Joy attended Mexia High School and was considered intelligent, beautiful and successful. Joy was Salutatorian of her class, Senior Class Favorite, Homecoming Princess and involved in activities such as Drama club, Choir and FHA. After graduating in 1958, Joy moved to Dallas and studied at Baylor University.
Joy loved her job and co-workers at Dallas Transit System, where she worked for many years.
In 1977, Joy married Roger Samuels. They have 4 children, Thomas Jordan, Jennifer O’Brien, David Samuels and Diana Tilton. Being a mother was one of the most important parts of Joy’s life, a role that gave her much pride and happiness. She was an excellent mother and grandmother; supportive, kind, responsible, and witty and we will all miss Joy dearly. She was a woman of strong faith and an active community volunteer. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the Presbyterian’s Women’s Club, the Mesquite Women’s Club, Sewing Club and Book club. She delivered meals on wheels and gave so much love to the people that relied on her.
Joy was passionate about books and when she wasn’t volunteering in various organizations, she could be found reading and learning. She was a skilled cruciverbalist (crossword puzzle worker) and voracious reader. Her quick mind was greatly admired. Joy was a matriarch and strong in spirit. When anyone else would have broken, Joy stayed capable and committed to challenges that arose. Through her, we know what dedication and perseverance truly look like.
Joy was predeceased by her father and her mother. She is survived by her husband of 45 years (Roger Samuels), 4 children, 8 grandchildren (Jennifer Hill, Brian Jordan, Kortni Forrest, Kaelin Forrest, Heather Morgan, Michael Graves, Matthew Graves, Riley O’Brien), 3 great-grandchildren (Max Morgan, Sawyer Hill and Milo Morgan), and sister (Anita Foley).
