Bette Ann Scates

Bette Ann Scates passed away peacefully at her home in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, on September 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 18, 1953, in Corcoran, California, to Robert Hardy Wyatt and Nannie Wayne (Taylor) Wyatt.

Bette earned her master’s degree in history from East Central University and dedicated her life to education, teaching at Coalgate Public Schools for 32 years before retiring in 2005. She married the love of her life, Harold Scates, on July 30, 1985, and together they made Tishomingo their home for the past 39 years.

A devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church, Bette served faithfully as the church secretary, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. Her passion for singing and love for the church community was an avid part of her life. In addition to her church work, she supported Harold in helping with the farm and loved horses. The couple were inseparable and were known for doing everything together, including traveling to 49 states—except Hawaii, as Bette wouldn’t fly.

Bette was an avid reader, loved books. She also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, history, and exploring national parks, always seeking adventure with her family. She is survived by her husband, Harold Scates of the home; her daughters, Kimberly Downard of McKinney, Texas, and Stefine Wood and husband Jay of Tishomingo; her son, Billy Scates of Tishomingo; her grandchildren, Jordan Westfall of Yukon, Camyn Knox of Houston, Konnor Knox of Oklahoma City, and Kizzie Wood of Tishomingo; and great-grandchildren Gigi and Reagan, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and four sisters.

A celebration of her life was held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
